Temple Bay

Temple Bay has always been synonymous with the Shore Temples of Mamallapuram, one of Asia's best-known monuments and one of the finest examples of Pallava architecture.

Started in 1957 as a stone house skirting the Mamallapuram Beach, Temple Bay was the first hotel on the East Coast Road that was an essential part of itineraries of all visiting dignitaries of yesteryear.

In the early 1960s, the Union government realised the economic importance of tourism and constituted the India Tourism Development Corporation and as a consequence Temple Bay became part of the ITDC and was transformed from a stone house into a cluster of hamlets and hammocks right on the beach front. The resort was influenced by elements of Pallava architecture. Over the last four decades, the Temple Bay has played host to kings and royalty, Nobel laureates and a galaxy of Indian administrators, including the Dalai Lama, Prince Charles, Indira Gandhi, King Birendra and Marshal Tito.

The Temple Bay became part of the GRT Hotels & Resorts in February 2002 under the Disinvestment Plan of the Union government. Between 2002 and 2004, the sprawling beach property has undergone a complete transformation.

Today, Temple Bay will fill the need for an international quality resort in the heart of Mamallapuram and will offer international travellers and Indian tourists a unique blend of south Indian culture coupled with beachside luxury of international standards. This is bound to create a positive impact for tourism in the region. GRT Hotels and Resorts, with their reputation for international service and product standards coupled with a strong value-for-money proposition, are all set to change the landscape along the picturesque East Coast Road with their third hotel.

A unit of GRT Leisure Hotels, Temple Bay is spread over 46 acres of pristine waterfront. The resort has 72 elegantly furnished chalets and villas with a breathtaking view of the Bay of Bengal.

Temple Bay is designed for leisure and conferences. Santa Maria, the multi-cuisine restaurant, The Wharf, the seafood specialty restaurant (to be launched shortly) offer a delightful gourmet experience.

Sun, sand and sea and the generous hospitality of the GRT group make this holiday experience memorable. The landscaped gardens, an infinity swimming pool with a sunken bar, blending with the sea make Temple Bay a romantic getaway. Temple Bay also offers relaxation in the form of an Ayurvedic massage centre and modern health club that includes steam, sauna, Jacuzzi, chill shower, aerobics and yoga.

The hotel also has state-of-the-art conferencing and banqueting facilities and a host of attractive conference packages.

Temple Bay is situated within easy access of several of Tamil Nadu's places of tourist interest - The Shore Temple, Chariots of the Pallavas, Arjuna's Penance, Tiger Cave, Thirukazhukundram and Kancheepuram.
