Gentlemen prefer the Verandah
A
beautiful Coffee Shop, bow tied stewards, candle light dinners, multi-coloured
drapes, some fabulous wine, it’s English all the way at the Verandah, the 24
hour Coffee Shop of the Taj Connemara. Starting from October 10, 2003, the
restaurant will host The Gentlemen’s Gourmet, a festival featuring a fine
selection of the preferred choices in English cuisine. The 10-day dinner
festival will also feature Trio Rogers, a three-member band belting out some
fine English numbers.
Said R Pashupathy, General
Manager, Taj Connemara, “As a hotel that has stood testimony to 150 years of
an evolving India, the Taj Connemara is the most historically rich hotel in
Chennai. Since its days during the British Raj, the hotel has evolved greatly.
The British influence is still quite apparent in a few sections, like the
heritage wing, of the hotel. Today, it is popular as the only hotel in the city
to have an authentic old world charm to it. The Gentlemen’s Gourmet is aimed
at reliving the refined English way of life. The festival will showcase some of
the finest of English cuisine in a backdrop that is typically English.”
The decor has been
aesthetically done to give the restaurant an ambience that spells class and
warmth. Neatly coordinated drapes, in hues of red, green and white gives the
place a look that is elegant and pleasant. The tables are set suitably to evoke
the apt mood during a candle light dinner. Stewards attired in frilled white
shirts, black trousers and a bow tie gracefully play the roles of charming
English hosts. And to complete the picture of the ideal English formal dinner,
Trio Rogers, a three-member band will whip out some classy English numbers and
entertain guests.
The cuisine at the festival
sounds just as interesting. The chefs at the hotel have culled a tasteful
selection of veg and non-veg recipes including starters, soups, the main course
and desserts. On the menu, stuffed brioches, cheese and potato munchers,
mushroom and barley casserole vie for attention with the goulash soup, golden
crust prawns, the old fashioned shepherd’s pie among numerous others. And to
end the battle for attention on a sweet note, the options include lemon meringue
pie, orange creme caramel and chocolate & brandy mousse to name a few. Also
on display is a wine counter that offers the finest selection in wine.
Ladies and gentlemen, the stage
is all set for you to enjoy the experience of a splendid English dinner. Just
remember, the curtains go down on October 19.
