Subway
Where: Spencer Plaza, Phase 3, second floor
What you get: Submarine Sandwiches
One body, One life, Eat right and stay fit. The catch line of Subway, an international food chain. And do they live up to that one!
Subway is relatively new in Chennai, opened about six months ago but a hot favourite to many. I wouldn’t have known about it if not for my friend who has been living off their food when she was abroad. So off we went one fine day to check this place out and I must say that it has become one of the places I haunt.
Subway has been started by Somna Sachdev, a housewife who surprisingly does not have a background with the food industry. Subway claims to be the fastest growing food chain with 20,919 outlets totally and growing, beating the figure of McDonald’s. Their USP is to provide healthy fast food. The outlet in Spencer’s Plaza can seat 40 people at a given time. And during rush hour it can be pretty tough to get seats.
This is the only outlet in India wholly dedicated to Submarine sandwiches. You will find a whole variety of those on the menu. All those who are pure vegetarians can rest assured to know that they have separate counters for Non Vegetarian and Vegetarian Subs. The veggies are brought in fresh everyday. No preservatives. Now that sounds damn cool. The meat they serve is Halal and is specially made and brought in from the Subway factory at an undisclosed location in India.
The bread is baked 4 times a day and is oven fresh. You have a choice of settling for a 6” sub or a foot long. You have a choice of 4 breads which is Italian, Wheat, Parmesan Oregano and Honey Oats. Once you have made the basic choice about the bread, the length of the sub and the type, you can personally choose how much or how less of the veggies you want in your sub. There is an array of ingredients for the sandwiches right from the veggies to the sauces spread in both counters and you decide may decide what exactly and how much of those you want in your sub. The prices start at Rs. 79 and go up to Rs. 130 per
6" sandwich.
For something to guzzle along you have hot and cold beverages. (Read tea and coffee, hot or iced, tinned juices, a choice of 2-3 milkshakes and the usual fizz). Ice creams for dessert.
For all those counting calories there is a calorie chart showing you how much goes down with each one.
One can look forward to an outlet in Chetpet and then in Adyar. And in case you don’t fancy traveling to the address on the busy Mount Road, they deliver too. 52118800 is the number to ring. And yes, they undertake party orders, as long as they are given enough notice.
Somna hastened to add that they basically are NOT delivery people and you don’t get free food if they happen to walk in late. Each of their sandwiches takes 3 minutes to make and if you are going to be ordering a few, you need to give them an hour or so including travel time.
It can be a wee bit expensive but these sandwiches are heavenly and at the end of the day you will be totally gratified for the money that you have spent.
Chinmayi
About Chinmayi
She has got a great voice. A trained singer, who specialises in Ghazals (the Urdu pronunciation is precise) and Hindustani music, Chinmayi leads the new crop of talented singers who are making waves in the South Indian film circuit.
The girl has sung quite a few numbers for A R Rahman (right from Oru Deivam Thantha Poove in Maniratnam's Kannathil Muthamittal) and several other leading music directors.
What is amazing is that she not only has a great voice but has phenomenal taste-buds! And a gift for writing too! Her favourite pastime is eating out at some of the city's new hang-outs.
Beginning today, we have a new weekly feature called Chinmayi's Choice, where we will have Chinmayi visiting some of the new eateries that have cropped up in the city, some of which we have heard of, others unheard. We have always struggled to find new joints for treats, parties, time-pass or just masti. Chennaionline and Chinmayi take you on a mouth-watering trip, week after week, to catch up with the changing Chennai cafe scenario. So watch out, ye restaurants and gourmets.
