Goodwill Communications to enter TV industry

Goodwill Commications Limited has been launched by the promoters of Tamil Maiyam to produce and provide programmes for the Tamil television industry.

The company was formally launched recently at a function which was chaired by writer Sujatha. Fr Jegath Gaspar Raj, the chairman and managing director of Tamil Maiyam, who will be the managing director of GCL, said it would aim at promoting and fostering Tamil culture, its literature, music and traditions, and its focus would be information-driven entertainment.

Value-added programmes would be the key. Opportunities to reach the viewers through the DTH model would also be explored. Though there were no immediate plans to launch its own channel, GCL could go in for it in a couple of years, Fr Jegath said.

There would be no influence from any corporate, linguistic or religious entity and the programmes would reflect the culture of Tamil Nadu, he said.

Sujatha said the company should first produce good programmes and later launch its own channel. Technology that moved away from the human metaphor would fail, he pointed out. He said he was happy to associate with this venture as a consultant.

The chairman of Media Development Foundation, Sashi Kumar, said GCL had been launched at the right place at the right time. Lamenting the politicisation of television channels in Tamil Nadu, he said GCL should give priority to local programmes, putting Tamil back where it belongs, and provide value-addition to programming instead of producing programmes merely to target another channel. Television had been reduced to a two-party system, while people had a right to know the truth. "A huge constituency is fed up with motivated programming," he said.

The managing director of Ma Foi Management Consultants Ltd., who will also be a director of GCL, K Pandiarajan, said the company's programmes should focus on truth. The culture of Tamil Nadu should be fostered, he added.

Paul Pandian, chairman, Axes Technologies Ltd., inaugurated the office in the Tamil Maiyam complex. Among those who offered felicitations were Rev Dr Antony Devotta, chairman, Tamil Nadu Bishops Council, and former MP Peter Alphonse. The directors of GCL include Akhila Srinivasan, MD of Sriram Investments.
