Rachida
/ Rachida 2002 / 100 min/ Arabic
Director: Yamina Bachir-Chouikh
Synopsis: Rachida, a young and self-assured teacher at an
elementary school, becomes the target of terrorists when she
refuses to place a bomb in her classroom. This acclaimed debut
feature offers a unique glimpse into the lives of ordinary
citizens in Algeria, where terrorism was commonplace during the
civil conflict of the 1990s. 'Rachida' reflects the drama that
Algeria and the Algerians lived for a about a decade, without
any support from the world and from all those who, today, loudly
denounce terrorism because New York experienced it on a certain
September 11. This moving film makes no concessions to the
criminals and not even tries to give any lessons or make
judgments: The director testifies on a society that sinks in
violence but she does not forget to show all the "anonymous"
people whose acts of bravery and courage saved the country from
the reign of terror. 'Rachida' talks about a critical period
without making the atmosphere oppressive. The film reminds us
that life, joy and hope never left Algerian society. During that
difficult time in the past, our children continued to go to
school, women lived, worked, organised feasts and encouraged men
to resist terror through any way they could.
Awards: 7 wins and 1 nomination
The Battle of Algiers / Maarakat madinat al
Jazaer 1966/ 121 min/Arabic / Black and White / History/
Director: Gillo Pontecorvo
Synopsis: Co-produced by Yacef Saadi, a former leader of the FLN
(Algerian Resistance Movement) and an Italian filmmaker Gillo
Pontecorvo in 1965, "La Bataille d'Alger" (Battle of Algiers) is
a story about the struggle of Algerians for independence from
the French colonial rule. It is about the organised guerilla
movement in the Casbah and the attempts by the French colonisers
to curb it. Depicting the real face of the oppressor in a
documentary style, the film has an astonishing relevance today.
Awards: 7 wins. Nominated for 3 Oscars.
Refusal 1982 / 90 min /
Director: Mohamed Bouamari
Synopsis: 'Refusals' was shot in 1982, in a period of changes in
Algerian society and politics. The country was questioning
itself on the role of each member and particularly that of
women, who at that time gained many rights: work, education,
liberty. This film has the same spirit as the other films of
Bouamari. The social problems, those of women at the core, are
interpreted in a direct and realistic language. Between
archaisms of tradition and their benefits or positive aspects,
women try to find an intermediary position. It is difficult, as
they are bound by family obligations that are not easy to cut
off.
A Roof, a Family / Un Toit, Une Famille 1982/
100 min/ Algeria
Synopsis: The oldest son of a large family is already 30 and not
yet married. He is an office clerk with the soul of a poet and
is highly perceptive, but his prospects for marriage are not the
same as other men his age because of his deformity: he is a
hunchback. Every night when he lands on his cot to sleep,
surrounded by his siblings sleeping on the floor around him, he
dreams of being able to escape his situation - maybe having a
beautiful woman fall in love with him or dancing like John
Travolta. As these funny sequences float through his
imagination, reality always comes back with a bang. One day, his
mother arranges a marriage for him with a woman he has not yet
seen. Her family is as overcrowded as his, and one of the
conditions for marriage is that he finds a place for himself and
his bride to live. Will his quest prove successful?
Ali in the Country of Mirages / Ali fi bilad
al-sarab 1981 / 118min / Feature
Director: Ahmed Rachedi
Synopsis: Ali is an immigrant in France. He is an Algerian crane
driver and lives there for years but his social condition has
never changed. Nevertheless, he is proud to have a job and earn
his living. Then, he accepts his frustrations knowing that he is
not in his own country. He takes philosophically the insults and
racial discrimination that he endures everyday because he is not
the only one to endure them. All the other immigrants are
victims of racism. His life changes completely the day he wins
in a lottery. This film was shot in 1979, in 35 mm.
Awards:1 win and 1 nomination
Adventures of a Hero / Mughamarat batal 1979/
120 min
Director: Merzak Allouache
Synopsis: Mehdi is a young peasant. His subterfuge leads him to
lie and make people believe that he is the hero of a farming
community that is awaiting a miracle to give them refuge from
the miseries of life. Mehdi is reinforced in this "mission" by
the notables who are his accomplices in this mystification which
would allow them to have more power in the tribe.
Awards: 2 wins
