Simran undecided on political role

Film actress Simran, who campaigned for the AIADMK in the recent elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, said on May 23 she was undecided on whether she would continue to be associated with politics.

Asked about the people's verdict which went against the AIADMK and how she took it, Simran said the people felt otherwise and they were entitled to their opinion and vote in whichever manner they felt.

The actress, asked if she had any regrets over entering politics and supporting the AIADMK, said, "I have no regrets over the decision. I liked the AIADMK. In particular, I liked Madam Jayalalithaa because she is a bold lady. I have a right to express my opinion. Likewise, the people have a choice too and they have exercised it. There is nothing to be upset about."

"Have I done anything wrong? Have I committed any sin? It's my personal choice, and what should I be sorry about?" she asked.

On whether she would continue to be in politics, Simran said the decision to campaign for the AIADMK was taken at that particular point of time. She had not decided yet whether she should continue to play a role in politics or not.

She denied she had received any payment for her campaign on behalf of the AIADMK. There is no question of receiving any payment. "I merely decided to campaign for the AIADMK. That was my own personal decision and that is that."

Asked why she had not campaigned for actor Vijaykanth though he belonged to the film industry, Simran said the question did not arise as she had already decided to support the AIADMK.

On whether her fans were upset over her political role, Simran said there was no need for her fans to be upset. Fans and others were free to vote for whomever they wanted, she said, adding that she got good support from the crowds wherever she went.

Reacting to a question on whether people thronged her election meetings only to have a look at her, and not necessarily to support her political views, Simran said it was quite possible that the crowd came more to look at her, and they were free to vote for anyone of their choice.

The people have given their verdict and she respected their choice, Simran added.
