Saturn - Krura lochana - the evil-eyed

Slogam

According to astrology if Saturn pierces and passes through the constellation of Rohini then it is considered to be very inauspicious and causes draughts for twelve years making even the survival of living beings impossible. This combination was about to come during the time of Dasharatha. He was cautioned by his astrologers against its consequences. To protect his subject from Shani's wrath Dasharatha went up in the constellation-zone. First of all he made salutations to the deity ‘Shani’ but when he refused he fought with him, using his most destructive weapon. ‘Shani’ became pleased by his sense of duty and asked him to demand any boon. Dasharatha requested him not to cross the Rohini-constellation’ till the sun and constellation exist. Shani agreed to his request.

The complexion and radiance of Saturn is as brilliant as a blue diamond. He has a golden crown on his head and wears a garland and blue coloured apparels. He is seated on the back of the vulture. He possesses a bow, an arrow and a trident in each of his three hands respectively and his fourth hand is raised in the posture of giving boons and blessings. Saturn is the son of Sun god and Chaya (Sanvarna). He is considered as a cruel planet. The cruelty, which he possesses in his sight, is due to the curse he received from his wife. The narration which has been mentioned in the Brahma Purana goes as follows:

The deity Shani (Saturn) was a great devotee of lord Krishna right from his childhood. He used to be immersed in the love for lord Krishna. His love for Krishna is such that he will not inflict malecious effects on deities of Krishna (Vishnu) who worship Krishna on Saturdays. (Recall the crowd we witness, at Vishnu temples on Saturdays. ) He was married to the daughter of ‘Chitraratha’. His wife was a chaste woman full of radiance. One night she went to him with a desire of having a son, but her husband Shani (Saturn) was immersed in the meditation of lord Krishna, and he was unconscious of his surroundings. She became tired of waiting and she became angry . She cursed him that from that day onwards whoever gets seen by him would be destroyed. After he came out of his meditative trance ‘Shani’ (Saturn) tried to make up with her by cajoling her. His wife too felt sorry for her mistake but she was powerless in neutralizing the ill effects of her curse. From then onwards Shani has been keeping his gaze downwards because he does not want to cause harm to anybody.

Shani is also known as Krura-lochana, - 'the evil-eyed one'. It is believed that Shani's gaze can spell disaster even to the most influential and powerful. Ancient Indian myth and folklore is replete with stories depicting the negative influences of this planet on the subject of his attention. Of the various stories that are mentioned in the Hindu mythology - Lord Ganesh getting an elephant's head is attributed to Shani. He being the devotee of Lord Shiva was meditating in the Himalayas to be close to his Lord. When Parvati, Shiva's consort, gave birth to Ganesh, she distributed sweets to Shiva's ganas, - the hosts. Goddess Parvati asked Shani to have a look at the child and bless him. Shani kept his head down and sought forgiveness from seeing the child, pleading that his gaze was inauspicious. Parvati, being the great Lord's consort, took no notice of this and asked him to bless the newborn. As soon as Shani lifted his head and looked at the child, the newborn's head got blown off.

Another celebrated myth about Shani is mentioned in the Ramayana. When King Ravana succeeded in getting control over all the nine planets, he installed them face down on the nine steps that led to his throne. Each morning, he would step on their back to ascend his throne, causing insult and anguish to them. One day sage Narada came to Ravana, and upon seeing the state of the nine planets asked Shani, how as the mightiest and most terrible of the planets, he could bear this insult? Shani replied because he was lying face downward he was helpless, but if he could cast his gaze on Ravana, matters would change. After Narada was shown around the magnificent palace of Ravana the proud king wanted his opinion. The wise sage replied that everything was excellent at the palace of Ravana, except for one. 'How can Ravana get the pleasure of subduing the nine planets when they were lying face downwards?' he asked. It was better if they were lying with their faces upward so that when Ravana stepped over their chests, he could get the pleasure of seeing the discomfort on their faces. This suggestion appealed to the mighty king and he quickly ordered his staff to turn the nine planets around on their backs. As soon as that was done, Shani's gaze fell on Ravana and his reason abandoned him. Within a few months he kidnapped Sita, the wife of Lord Rama that led to Lord Rama's invasion of his kingdom. Ravana and his entire family were killed, and al this happened during the seven and half years cycle of Shani.

Lord Brahma is the presiding deity of Saturn. His complexion is dark, his vehicle is a vulture and his chariot is made of iron. Saturn remains in each of the twelve zodiacs for thirty months. It is believed that wearing black clothes and a dark blue sapphire or diamond, offering sesame rice (yellu sadham) as prasadam and lighting sesame lamps with gingely oil (yellu vilakku) will appease the ill effects of Shanishwara.

Chanting the following mantras pacifies Saturn:
