Dasaavataara in Vishnu Sahasranama

Daily Religion Column

Our ancestors, elders, religious heads have all averred unequivocally that the devout, daily recitation of the 1000 names of Lord Sri Vishnu-Vishnu Sahasranama - will confer on the devotee all possible riches and benefits, both material and spiritual. This, of course, does not mean that one can afford to neglect his assigned duties and obligations. One has to be a highly evolved soul for that! But then, in the case of such highly evolved souls, benefits and fruits of efforts are of little or no significance at all.

Efficacy of Vishnu Sahasranama

It cannot be controverted that the chant of Vishnu Sahasranama as ordained enables one to transcend from the base levels of his personality and climb to the sublime, mental altitudes through intense, concentrated meditation. One's personality gets expanded most meaningfully and great achievements are made possible. Why don't you try and see if the chant helps you? One word of caution though, do not be a lesser seeker, and never neglect your responsibilities.

Upendra, Atindra, Oorjitah

'Upendra' may imply the younger brother of Indra, the celestial chief, but in truth, 'Upendra' is 'Atindra' - one who is far beyond Indra in all aspects and areas of knowledge, glory and strength. If Indra is the 'mind' - intellect Atman, 'Atindra' is the 'Self' that transcends the mind! 'Atindra' is 'Oorjitah' - proven strength and vitality (ref. names 156 & 157 - Vishnu Sahasranama). 'Vamana' came as a 'dwarf' beguiling everyone of any consequence and soon transcended everything, everywhere - 'Trivikrama' - conqueror of the three worlds by just 'three feet', the boon he asked of king Mahabali, the most powerful rendered in a trice the most weak. He subdued Indra but was subjugated by 'Upendra' turned Atindra's 'Vaasavaanuja' (brother of Vaasava, that is Indra), and also refers to Vamana (name - 322).

Hamsaavataara

The Lord had occasion once to incarnate as a Hamsa (the Royal Swan) and expound the 'Hamsa Gita'. Many are not familiar with this. Namas 188 to 194 - 'Suraanandha to Suparna' refer to the Divine Royal Swan - the Hamsaavataara - with tremendous esoteric significance.

The Man-Lion Lord Narahari

Sri Narasimha, of the man-lion form, is praised through eleven (200 to 210) names. Matsyavataara, the Lord's incarnation as the 'Giant Fish' - the first incarnation is detailed through fifteen names (211-225). 'Guru Gurutmah' to 'Netaa Samiranah' (315-319) hail the axe- wielding destroyer of evil forces, 'Parasurama' - the sixth incarnation. The name 'Krodhakaari' (316) is self-significant. 'Parasurama' is feared as 'Rosha Raama', the highly sensitive terrible Rama (Parasurama) who will not brook any offence to him!

Giant Tortoise (Kurma) incarnation

The 'Kurmaavataaraa' - the second incarnation as the Giant Tortoise, that lifted the sinking Mandara mountain during the churning of the Milky Ocean, gets delienated through eleven meaningful names.

Kapindra-Daasaarha-Rama!

Sri Rama is hailed as 'Kapindrah' - the Lord of the monkey army, celestials born as monkeys to assist Sri Rama to eliminate the wicked demon Ravana. Sri Rama is revered as 'Daasaarhah' - one who gifts himself away to refugees - those who seek sole refuge in him - ref. 'Sakrudeva Prapannaya...Etad Vratam Mama' - Valmiki Ramayanam - Yuddha Kandam - Vibhishana Saranagati episode.
