New Temple Car at Kancheepuram

The idol of Lord Varadaraja was taken around the streets of the holy town of Kancheepuram in the new temple Car of the Devarajaswamy temple on 22nd May 2000. Thousands of devotees witnessed the Car festival. The new chariot, built at a cost of Rs 38 lakhs under the auspices of the Kanchi Mutt, was inaugurated by the Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. The Joint Commissioner of the state HR and CE Department, Mr Raja, was present on the occasion. The chariot was built in just five months with generous public donations. Only the massive wheels had been got ready earlier. It is constructed of 75 per cent Teak wood and 25 per cent Kongu wood. Here is a photo feature:
