The Roots of War
Approximately 55 kms from Chennai is Narasingapuram, the abode of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha and Maragathavalli
Thayar.
The majestic seven-foot-tall idol of the presiding deity Lakshmi Narasimha and the five feet tall idol of Maragathavalli Thayar are a treat to behold, leaving devotees yearning for the next visit to the temple. Though the temple is believed to belong to the Vijayanagar style of architecture with delicate and intricate carvings, there are inscriptions dating back to the period of the Cholas. The temple is thus of
archaeological importance too.
The centuries-old temple now
seems to be giving way. The once majestic tower is now reduced to just damaged tiers and a basement. The shrine of Andal has been lost in the pages of history, and the shrines of the Lord and the Goddess are in near-dilapidation state. Also, the floor and ceiling of the 'thirukkalyanamandapam' and the 'vimanams' are shrouded by overgrowth.
Plans have been made to reconstruct the temple and conduct the kumbhabhishekam, thereby preventing further decay. The cost of such reconstruction of the entire temple runs into lakhs of rupees. If help is forthcoming, it should be possible to preserve the glory of the temple.
