Meenakshi temple prasadam
Ending the role of private operators, the administration of the famous
Meenakshi temple in Madurai has decided to revert to the age-old practice of preparing the temple prasadams as per its manual and selling them directly.
The prasadams would be sold through a devasthanam stall, to be run on ‘no-profit-no-loss basis’, board of trustees chairman Karumuthu T. Kannan has said.
The prasadams, such as 'ghee vada', were once as famous as the Panchamirtham of the Lord Murugan temple at Palani or the laddu of the Lord Venkateswara shrine at Tirumala when they were prepared as per the temple manual several decades ago.
But their quality deteriorated over the years after private operators took up the sale on an annual lease basis.
Kannan said the devasthanam also planned to set up an "icon centre" at nearby Tiruvapudayar temple where the utsava idols of temples in remote areas could be stored for preservation when there were no festivals.
Temple executive officer P Baskaran said steps would be taken to protect the idols from fungus formation.
