Babaji lives on

The Roots of War

India is a land of saints. There have been saints at any given time of history. Some have existed in only one particular time, while others, it is believed, have continued to exist for millennia. One such paramukta (supremely free - full power over death) was Sri Sri Mahavatara 'Babaji'.

For many youngsters these days, Babaji brings to mind a film made by Rajinikanth, called 'Baba'. Actually the movie as loosely based on the wonderful power of this Babaji.

Babaji, who lived in the northern Himalayan crags near Badrinarayan, is believed to have influenced many saints down the centuries, including Kabir (1450-1580).

Babaji is believed to be a 'Yogi-Christ' but can seldom been found in the physical body.

He did retain his physical form for centuries, perhaps for millennia - a body that requires no food. Thus he was called an 'avatar'. Babaji’s mission in India has been to assist prophets in carrying out their special dispensation. He, thus, qualifies for the scriptural classification of 'Mahavatar' (great avatar).

His chief 19th century disciple was 'Lahiri Mahasaya', a revivalist of the lost Kriya yoga . The work of these two fully illumined masters - one with a body and one without - is to inspire nations to forsake wars, race hatreds and shun materialism.

Babaji was well aware of the trend of modern times, especially of the influence and complexities of western civilisation, and realised the necessity of spreading the self-liberation of yoga equally in the west and the east.

An amazing incident

Here is an example of the wonderful life that Babaji led. His deep meditation was disturbed by the arrival of a stranger. The man’s face was lit with inexpressible reverence, "For months I have pursued a ceaseless search for you among these forbidding crags. I implore you to accept me as a disciple." When the great guru made no response, the man pointed to the rock-lined chasm below the ledge. "If you refuse, I will jump from this mountain. Life has no further value if I cannot win your guidance to the divine."

Babaji said unemotionally, "Jump then. I cannot accept you in your present state of development." The man immediately hurled himself over the cliff. Then, Babaji instructed some people to fetch the stranger’s body. After they had returned with the mangled form, the master placed his hand on the dead man. The stranger opened his eyes and prostrated humbly before the omnipotent guru. "You are now ready for the discipleship. You have courageously passed a difficult test. Death shall not touch you again; now you are one of our immortal flock." Receiving his grace can be as difficult or as easy as this, depending on one's point of view.

An avatar lives in the omnipresent sprit: even Jesus knew from the beginning the sequence of his life; he passed through each event not for himself, not from any karmic compulsion, but solely for the upliftment of human beings.

Masters like Babaji always veil themselves from public gaze and have the power to become invisible at will. For these reasons, and because they generally instruct their disciples to maintain silence about them, a number of towering spiritual figures remain unknown.

I give in these pages on merely a hint of his life - only a few facts that he deems fit and helpful to be publicly imparted.
