Venkateswara kalyana utsavam in Chennai
Nearly two lakh devotees are expected to witness the celestial wedding of Lord Venkateswara, the presiding deity of Tirumala temple, with Goddess Padmavathi, in Chennai on Sunday, March 5.
The city will be the first metro to witness the ‘kalyana utsavam’. This will be the fourth occasion, after several hundred years, when it is being held outside the hill shrine in Andhra Pradesh, TTD joint executive officer K Venkatadharma Reddy said in
Chennai.
He said the TTD Trust Board had decided to conduct the ‘kalyana utsavam’ outside Tirumala to enable more number of devotees, who would otherwise have to come to the hills, to witness the spectacle.
The 'utsava murthy' (procession deity) would be brought from Tirumala and ‘archakas' from the hills would come to Chennai to perform the celestial wedding, he said.
Thanking the Tamil Nadu government for allowing the function to be held on government land in the Koyambedu area, Reddy said police had made elaborate security arrangements.
Three lakh booklets and 50,000 packets of ‘prasadam’ would be distributed on the occasion.
