The roar of the lion
One day in the late '80s, Ravi Chellam, a young Ph.D. student, was following a lion in the Gir Forest. Being in close proximity to his study subjects was nothing new to him and that day wasn't special. The lion seemed unconcerned - so subject and biologist walked in single file, with Ravi maintaining a comfortable distance. Suddenly, without warning, the lion turned around and began charging towards the young student.
Shocked and taken by surprise, Ravi's reflexes took over. Years of cricket practice had ensured a good pair of running legs and he sprinted up a nearby hillock. Luckily, the lion decided not to follow him up the hill, and a mishap was averted.
So what in heaven's name was a Madras boy doing, following lions and being chased by them in Gujarat?!
Find out when Dr Ravi Chellam recounts his tales from the bush and illuminates us about the life of the last Asiatic lions.
It will be an illustrated talk. All are welcome at Bookpoint Auditorium, 160, Anna Salai (opposite Spencer Plaza), on Saturday, September 18.
