On the basis of the overall score of each of the
participating colleges, the Dr Sivanthi Adityan Overall Rolling Trophy
was given to MOP Vaishnav College for Women in VASPO - the Annual
Inter-Collegiate Sports Festiva hosted by the college.
VASPO 2007, as anticipated, was highly competitive,
exciting and interesting as players of national and inter-national
levels competed with one another for the trophy. This has become an
important tournament for sports lovers in India.
The sports meet was inaugurated on July 9, 2007, by S
Kumaraswamy, retired IPS officer and present vice-chairman, Sports
Development Authority of Tamilnadu (SDAT).
This year VASPO '07 consisted of three games -
Basketball, Table Tennis and Volley Ball. In the table tennis match, MOP
Vaishnav College for Women secured the first place, and Stella Maris
came second.
In the basketball final, MOP Vaishnav College for
Women came first again and the second place was secured by Ethiraj
College.
The final Volley Ball match was postponed due to
rains. On the basis of the overall score of each of the participating
colleges, the Dr Sivanthi Adityan Overall Rolling Trophy was given to
MOP Vaishnav College for Women.
The valedictory ceremony of VASPO '07 was a grand
affair with the presence of Chennai Mayor Ma Subramaniam as the chief
guest and Atulya Mishra, member-secretary, Sports Development Authority
of Tamilnadu (SDAT), as the guest of honour. The prizes and trophies
were given away to the winners by the Mayor.
In 2005, MOP College initiated VASPO at the state
level. VASPO is a platform for all aspiring sportswomen to compete for
the much revered Dr Sivanthi Adityan Overall Rolling Trophy in three
main events - Basketball, Volley Ball, and Table Tennis.
Student-delegates from 42 colleges took part in the
sports festival that was held from July 9-11, 2007. Over 400 players
from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka including the rural colleges
of Erode, Virudhunagar district participated this year. VASPO 2007, for
the first time, has opened its doors to engineering colleges as well.
The event is noted for its excellent sports performances and is now
keenly looked forward to as an annual sports festival.
