ESPN signs up Wasim Akram

ESPN STAR Sports, India’s leading sports broadcaster, today signed up Wasim Akram, one of the greatest bowlers of modern cricket, as an exclusive presenter and commentator for its cricket related programming. R.C. Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd formally welcomed Wasim Akram to the ESPN STAR Sports family by presenting him with an ESPN STAR Sports blazer. With this, Wasim Akram becomes a part of ESPN STAR Sports’ esteemed ‘Few Good Men’ commentary team.

The announcement of Wasim Akram joining ESPN STAR Sports comes close on the heels of the recent landmark signing of another cricketing great Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly joined ESPN STAR Sports on September 15 to co-host the ‘Samsung Cricket Show’ on ESPN making him the first playing cricket captain ever to co-host a TV show. Wasim, in addition to presenting and playing the role of a commentator on the channel’s cricket related programmes, would also be making publicity and promotional appearances for ESPN STAR Sports’ advertising and marketing efforts. Wasim Akram starts his new innings as a commentator with the England-Bangladesh series starting on Tuesday, October 21, 2003. The cricket fans of India can then watch him commentating on India’s performance, as he tours Australia to cover the three month long India tour of Australia, starting December 2003.

R.C. Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd, said, “We are delighted to welcome Wasim Akram to the ESPN STAR Sports family. Cricket followers in the subcontinent will now want Wasim to swing into action as he takes commentary position with ESPN STAR Sports live coverage of England’s tour of Bangladesh and India’s tour Down Under in December 2003.”

“Wasim has bowled to every single top rated batsmen in the world, which places him in an unique position vis-à-vis all the other commentators in the business. In addition to this, his understanding of the conditions in the Indian subcontinent and international experience will make for exciting analysis,” said Venkateish.

"ESPN STAR Sports’ ‘Few Good Men’ have always set benchmarks in cricket commentary and analysis. The team has benefited from the experience of greats like Sunil Gavaskar and Sir Geoffery Boycott. With Wasim, we now have the highest run scorer and the highest wicket taker in the world in our commentary team. Wasim who comes with his understanding of modern day cricket issues would offer the very important and credible bowlers’ perspective. Wasim has a huge fan following in the subcontinent as well as across the globe. We are delighted to have him on board, ” he added.

Commenting on his new role, Wasim Akram, said, “People have always asked my views about cricket, players, venues, conditions and many other things connected with this great game. In my new role as an analyst of the game, I will now be able to speak my mind freely. I owe it to my fans. I hope they will support me in my new role with the same passion as they supported me on the ground.”

“ After a long and satisfying cricket career I look forward to joining the ESPN STAR Sports commentary team.” he added.

In a career spanning nearly 20 years, Wasim Akram emerged as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time taking the highest number of wickets in international cricket combining both forms of cricket. He played 104 tests claiming 414 wickets, and scoring 2,898 runs with a highest score of 257. He is also the highest wicket taker in ODIs with 502 wickets to his credit, at an average of 23.5, in 356 matches.

Now that the gutsy and combative all-rounder Wasim Akram has joined the ‘Few Good Men’ team, an unique dimension has been added to ESPN STAR Sports cricket commentary. Akram, an Imran Khan protégé, always left an indelible impression during his career on the spectators and opposition alike. He also remained Waqar Younis’s senior partner to form one of the greatest fast bowling pairs in the history of the game. The Wasim-Waqar pair has taken in all 1,550 wickets in both forms of the game together, with Waqar taking 689. Their pair will always be remembered in the same league as Larwood and Voce, Lindwall and Miller, Trueman and Statham, Hall and Griffith.

Tune in to the charismatic ace cricketer Wasim Akram, now as a part of ESPN and STAR Sports’ ‘Few Good Men’ team!
