Some of the important events taking place in this year’s Shaastra are: The Greatest Thing in the World: This event is the pride of Shaastra. Last year they created the world’s largest paper bridge (in terms of height and length) during Shaastra. The record has entered the Limca Book of Records and they have also applied to The Guinness Book of World Records. This year their aim is to create the largest mechanical model of the game Snake (usually available in Nokia mobiles). The game will have minimum dimensions of 30 feet by 30 feet. Building this game is not only a mechanical challenge, but also a physical challenge. They will be applying to both the record books again. The assembly of the entire game will take place during Shaastra. Video Conferences and Lectures: The VCs are undoubtedly the biggest events at Shaastra. In the past they had VCs with eminent scientists and social thinkers. This year they will be having a VC by Martin L. Perl who is an Experimental Particle Physicist at SLAC, Stanford. He won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995 and he will be speaking on the “Six Maxims for Science”. There will also be lectures by Mahesh Murthy (CEO PassionFund), Hafeez Contractor and Dr. Vijay Chandru (CEO and Co-founder of Strand Genomics). The Great Invention (economical engineering solutions for NGOs): A number of NGOs have approached IIT Madras to come up with simple cost effective solutions to problems. During Shaastra, people will be given these problems and they will be asked to come up with solutions. One problem is to design a communication system between some local villages so that one trader can inform the other villages what the prices of his goods are. Another problem is to come up with a better writing system in brail. Brail is written in the usual left to right way by engraving dots on sheets of paper. But while reading the paper, it has to be inverted and the words have to be read from right to left. For small children this is a very tough task and hence we have been asked to design a stylus which will engrave upwards and both reading and writing can be done from left to right. Robotics: The robotics team of IIT Madras is trying to create an eight legged walking spider. The motions similar to that of animals is a very tough to imitate and poses a big challenge for robotics engineers. The other project involves synchronisation between a number of robots. The robots will be left in an arena and they will detect each other and slowly come together and move together. This is an exercise in simulating prey-predator models and collaboration between machines. Workshops: The workshops at Shaastra are big crowd pullers. This year they are going to have a bike stripping workshop by Enfield and a workshop on Xerox machine technology by Canon.
