IIT's 'Shaastra' from October 4

'Shaastra', the annual technological festival of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, will be conducted from October 4 to 7, 2002 "with emphasis on events that embody the spirit of popular engineering". 

The programmes in the festival include workshops, lectures and video-conferencing.

There is a workshop on astronomy on October 4 which will be conducted with assistance from the Birla Planetarium and Periyar Science and Technology Park in Chennai. The workshop will introduce beginners to the fundamentals of astronomy, including chart-reading and the use of telescopes, and demonstrate the use of some advanced techniques also. 

A workshop on printing press will be conducted by publications department of the IIT-Madras on October 5.

The workshop on robotics, to be conducted on October 5, will deal with amateur robotics, and guides the novice through the steps involved in building a basic robot.

The Intelligent Environment Workshop, to be conducted on October 7, will deal with the concepts and methodology of interfacing a computer with the external environment to perform all sorts of monitoring and control applications. 

There will be a series of lectures by eminent personalities: 

  •  Inaugural lecture by Viji Santanam, vice-chairman, Sundaram Finance Ltd 

  •  'Virtuality in Robotics' by Dr Prakash Naidu, head, Robotics, Automation and Virtual Reality, CAIR, Bangalore 

  •  'Experiences in Simputer Development' by Dr Swami Manohar, CEO, Picopeta Ltd. 

  •  A Lecture on Mathematics by Dr M S Raghunathan, TIFR, Mumbai 

  •  'Automobile Design' by Dilip Chabria, CEO, D C Designs, Mumbai 

  •  'Challenges in Computational Biology' by Dr Vidyasagar, executive vice president, TCS, Hyderabad 

  •  'Forensic Pathology' by Dr Anil Aggrawal, Maulana Azad College, New Delhi 

  •  '64 bit Computing' by Rahul Singh, marketing head, AMD India 

Another highlight of 'Shaastra' is video-conferencing which will serve as a platform for interaction between luminaries and participants. There will be competitions including on-the-spot competitions, design contests and paper presentation sessions.
