Celebrating Sivaji Ganesan

Raj TV is organising a grand music festival under the name ‘Imayathukku Indhiya Anjali,’ in fitting memory of the all-time-great Sivaji Ganesan and also to raise funds for the Sivaji - Prabhu Charities Trust. Date and venue are as follows:

Date: September 28, 2001 - from 5.00 pm to 10.00 pm
Venue: Chennai Airlines indoor stadium

‘We were actually keen in conducting such a programme even when Sivaji was alive. But it could not be done for one reason or the other. It has come to fruition now,’ said Rajendran, Managing Director of Raj TV.

With the orchestration by Shankar’s ‘Saadhagap paravaigal’ a bevy of celebrities like Meena, Sukanya, Sangavi, Maheshwari, Divya Unni, Vindhya, Kanaga, Preetha Vijayakumar and others would dance to the delight of the audience. Dance Master Lalitha Mani and her team is looking after the choreography.

And then there will be one-act plays and skits by Chinni Jayanth, Y. G. Mahendra and Sivakumar. Clippings from the video on Sivaji’s life, made by T. V. Narayanaswamy will be screened.

Vairamuthu has penned the theme song and S. P. Balasubramaniam will be singing it in the programme. It was Vairamuthu who named the show ‘Imayathukku Indhiya Anjali.’

The programme will be conducted on a stage measuring 10,000 sq. ft.

Apart from celebrities from Tamil Cinema, VIPs of Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam Cinema also participate to pay homage to Sivaji.

Ramkumar, eldest son of Sivaji, who attended the Press Meet shared a few interesting things with us.

‘The All India Radio has made an interview of Sivaji, for 12 hours and it was originally planned to serialise this interview from October 1st onwards. Due to several reasons, it has now been postponed to start from coming Pongal. Then it would be broadcast until his birthday next year. A biography is under preparation, on the basis of this interview. Negotiations for publishing the book in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Bengali have been completed. An international publication is publishing it in English. The work on translation is on full-steam now.’

‘Next year is the 50th year of the release of Parasakthi, the first film of Sivaji. The biography will be brought out on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Parasakthi. We will be bringing out Video CDs too, on the occasion. Incidentally, next year is the 75th birthday of Sivaji.’

Ramkumar highlighted a strange coincidence. The coronation of Sivaji the original - the Maharashtrian king - was held on July 21, 1674. And Sivaji Ganesan passed into eternity on the same day, July 21.

Tickets cost Rs.5,000/-; Rs.1,000/-; Rs.500/-; Rs.200/- and Rs.100/-. All the proceeds from the show would be donated to the Sivaji - Prabhu Charities Trust.
