Kamal Hassan's gesture

Actor Kamal Hassan recently made a handsome donation -- 10,000 kilos of rice to physically and economically disavantaged children and senior citizens.

What is more he himself handed over the rice packets to them. That required considerable patience and tolerance, since his office on TTK Road in Alwarpet was cramped, packed as it was to capacity.

Worse still, he was jostled, pushed around and virtually mauled by the recipients and fans who wanted to shake hands with him or thump him on his back.

Kamal put up with the 'physical torture'. All for a good cause.

The actor defended the activities of his Narpani Manram, saying they were not into politics but took up social causes like this. He had made it clear to his fans that he did not want them to merely eulogise him or put up his posters or make demands that he should enter politics. He was not at all interested in politics, he said, adding that he had decided to take charge of the Manrams mainly to ensure that the fans did not stray into the political arena.

"If I don't take control of the Manram, they could end up doing all kinds of things, over which I will have no control. That is why I decided that they will merely have goals like social service, which I will have to approve. They will implement schemes and proposals which have my approval."

Kamal Hassan has also decided that he will not reduce his fees as the action will not prove beneficial for the paying public. It will merely seek to help producers who are on the look-out for more profits.
