Rotary Chennai Olympiad gets huge response
The three-day event got up by the Rotary International Dist 3230 - captioned Rotary Chennai Olympiad 2006 - was a huge success with over 4,500 students from 300 schools participating in various track and field events.
C K Valsan, member, International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF), helped in organising the event. Speaking on the occasion, he said, "It was heartening that the number of participants has increased considerably this year."
Air Commodore G R Prasad, Vishisht Seva Medal, Air Officer Commanding Air Force Station, Avadi, was the chief guest at the valedictory held on August 20, 2006 (Sunday). J B Kamdar, District Governor, Rotary, was also present.
T P M Mohideen Khan, Minister for Environment & Sports, Government of Tamil Nadu, was the chief guest for the inaugural function of Rotary Chennai Olympiad 2006, which was held on August 18, 2006. District Governor Kamdar was also present.
Rotary International sponsored training for the best athlete from each category. The following are the overall winners:
Junior Girls: A Manjuka, Karnataka Sangam School.
Junior Boys: M Jeffrey, SBOA Junior College.
Senior Girls: P Janet Shiny, Grace Matriculation School.
Senior Boys: R J Rajesh Sharma, SBOA Junior College.
