What students say

Chennaionline spoke to some of the students of Chennai to find out what their reaction was to the recent Anna University ban on the use of cellphones and imposing a dress code. Here are their reactions:

Ban on cellphones:

"Cell phones have been banned in all colleges under Anna University. It dosen't really make sense because colleges which are not in the city have no PCO booth near them. So we have no means of communication with our parents in case of emergencies. Cellphones can be banned in classes but not on the campus. Camera phones can be banned.” - L. Jinendra Kumar, B Tech - Chemical, Sri Venkatteshwara College of Engineering. (Anna University).

Rupal Soni

“As a student, I feel cell phones should not be banned but they should be switched off during class hours. But camera phones and one with blue tooth technology should surely be banned in co-ed colleges.” – Sonia Sinha, age 20, MOP Vaishnav College.

“Cell phones are a huge necessity nowadays as it is handy to use whenever any problem or emergency arises. We are required to do a lot of projects and fieldwork and hence this helps us to contact people from wherever we are. It also acts as a watch, calendar, pocket note and phone book. We can set reminders about our exams, assignments and so on. It is a multipurpose instrument and a ban on such an instrument is like a ban on progress.” – Rupal Soni, Age 19, MOP Vaishnav College.

Sruthika

“Cell phones distract the students too much, especially phones with camera. I don’t find anything wrong in having a cell phone but it should be used outside the campus. Ban on cell phones reduces inequality in wealth in college and puts an end to inferiority or superiority complexes.” – Sruthika, age 18, Women’s Christian College.

Dress Code:

"Dress code for girls is a must. I am not being chauvinistic but it is for their protection. Salwar or jeans with long kurtis is perfect for them. For boys there is no point in having a dress code. As it is our collection is limited. We have to wear formals at the workplace anyway. So why can't we wear T-shirts and jeans? We are not gonna wear lowrise ones or shorts. Maybe they can ban T-shirs with vulgar words written on them.” - L. Jinendra Kumar, B Tech – Chemical, Sri Venkatteshwara College of Engineering.(Anna University).

“The colleges should allow us to wear at least jeans and T-shirts if not other clothes. As long as we are presentable and not obscene it’s perfectly fine. We were in uniform throughout school and we will have a dress code in place at work. We need some sort of freedom. Our clothes are our identity.” – Sonia Sinha, MOP Vaishnav College.

Sonia Sinha

“Dress code is ok. No vulgarity should be allowed. Students should wear clothes which are decent so that it does not provoke eve-teasing.” - Rupal Soni, MOP Vaishnav College.

“I personally feel dress code is the most important thing any college must follow. We don’t find sarees or half-sarees nowadays. Nowadays only low hip jeans are in vogue along with skimpy T-shirts. I feel they are not wrong but attract wrong people in wrong ways. Our dress shows, culture and the way we are brought up. Hence, dress code is necessary.” – Sruthika, Women’s Christian College.
