Ullas Trust was established by the employees of Polaris Software Lab Ltd. in 1997 at Chennai. The underlying philosophy of the Trust is “Give back to the society what the society gave you”. Forty per cent of each scholarship is borne by Polaris’ employees and the remaining, by the company. The goal of the Trust is to reach out to the economically weaker sections of society, and encourage academic excellence among bright, young, deserving students with high academic performance. Students with good academic records are identified and awarded the ‘You Can Do It!’ scholarships of Rs. 1,500.

In addition to Ullas’ existing endeavours, three key initiatives of 2003, which re-defined the span of social responsibility, was undertaken by the Trust. First, a trophy, 'Encouraging Excellence in Education' (EEE) Award was instituted to recognize stellar performance of specific schools in nurturing young students. Principals from those achieving schools were chosen for the 'Best Principal Award'. Second, Ullas also encouraged higher education among Ullas scholars last year, by awarding nine brilliant students with the 'Ullas Achiever’s Higher Education Scholarship' to pursue higher education in colleges. The third initiative was refreshingly progressive and unique, as Ullas opened bank accounts for Ullas Scholars.

Thus, what began as a humble CSR initiative six years ago has today, become a full-fledged movement. Ullas is changing lives, inspiring children and contributing to building a nation of educated, self-reliant individuals. Till date, almost 7,000 students have benefited from Ullas Trust, and in 2003 alone, 18 students from standard XII were state rank holders / school toppers. Today, several training programmes are conducted, and area-wise chapters (student clubs) receive guidance from Ullas volunteers to participate in extra-curricular activities. After the initial success of Ullas Trust in Chennai, Polaris is now gearing up to expand to other geographies in India.

Applications will be available at the Ullas office on 4th Floor, Shakti Towers, 766 Anna Salai, Chennai – 600 002 from June 1, 2004 to June 8, 2004, between 0900 and 1600 hrs. Last date to receive the filled application forms is June 14, 2004.
