SNEHA, a voluntary organisation extending “emotional support to the depressed, desperate and suicidal” since 1986, will be running a round-the-clock helpline service for students who need counselling after the announcement of plus-2 results.
A press release from SNEHA says on an average more than 200 students in the age group of 14 to 29 years commit suicide in Tamil Nadu during the publication of examination results.
Research shows that negative feelings get extremely heightened during the lonely hours of the night. At that juncture, there is a desperate need for human contact. “To address this need, we have been extending 24-hour helpline service for the past four years during the release of examination results. We intend to extend the service this year also from May 15 to May 30,” says SNEHA director P V
Sankaranarayanan.
The non-profit organisation, manned by volunteers, normally works on all days from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. “Our services are totally free,” reminds the press release.
