There will also be an interaction with selected alumni who will share their experiences of studying in the UK. You can also meet other students going to the UK (and perhaps even to your institution!). This is an opportunity to ask questions and clear doubts, if any. Moreover, you are sure to receive expert advice as special guests from the visa section of the British High Commission will be present.

Students and parents are required to register for the event. A nominal registration fee will be charged.

Student visa appeal review

Students seeking entry clearance to study in the UK, who have been refused a visa and wish to appeal against the decision, are invited to meet with Visa Officers from the British Deputy High Commission in Chennai on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at the British Council Division, 737 Anna Salai, Chennai 600 002.

This is a unique opportunity for students to meet with the Visa officers from British Deputy High Commission, Chennai. Visa officers will review the appeals and a decision will be made within 28 working days in terms of upholding or overturning the decision to refuse.

Kevin Woods, head of the Visa Department in Chennai said, "Students are often refused entry clearance because they have received bad advice and have not prepared their application well. By introducing this pilot, genuine students have the opportunity to demonstrate that they meet Immigration Rules in time to start their course."

Woods added, "Over the past two years, we have worked closely with the British Council and around 80 student agents to establish a Trusted Partnership network across India. We provide training and guidance to our Trusted Partners so that genuine students know where they can obtain accurate advice. We encourage students to log on to www.ukinindia.com  for information and to apply early."

Students with appointments must bring with them:

  • A fully completed AIT 2 appeal form (this form is included with the refusal notice) . Original passport

  • Documentary evidence that addresses the reasons for refusal

  • Original documents to show that the course has not yet started or that they have obtained permission to join late.

This new arrangement is not open to students who have been refused and wish to make a fresh application for entry clearance through the normal channels (as opposed to an appeal against the decision). In addition, the service is only open to those who have been refused student entry clearance by Chennai British Deputy High Commission between June 20 2007 and July 18 2007.

The British Council organised a seminar on student visas for the benefit of all students who have secured admission from UK institutions for the September 2007 intake and are in the process of applying for visas, in Chennai on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at the British Council.

Ryan Bennett, Entry Clearance Officer, UK Visas, briefed the students on the latest visa procedures and answered queries. The briefing provided an excellent opportunity for students to clarify all their doubts on the student visas.
