MDI, GOI launch PGD in Energy Management
The Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon, one of the top 5 B-schools in India in collaboration with the Ministry of Power, Government of India and USAID, has launched a Post-Graduate Diploma in Energy Management. The course commenced on July 18, 2005.
The course has been introduced under the Distribution Reform, Upgrades and Management (DRUM) Project - designed jointly by the Ministry of Power and USAID to demonstrate "the best commercial and technological practices that improve the quality and reliability of ‘last mile’ power distribution in urban and rural areas in the country".
The EPGDBM is a 15-month course with 12 months' stay at the MDI campus and a three-month in-company dissertation. The course is targeted at executives of SEBs and Central State and private power utilities with
at least 15 years of experience. The programme fee of Rs 1.80 lakh will be borne by MoP and GoI under the DRUM project for the next three years for a batch of 50 participants each year. However, the selection of candidates is done through a rigorous process. The candidates sponsored by the utilities are screened through a written test followed by group discussion and an interview, to be conducted by MDI.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Power minister P M Sayeed said, "Power is knowledge. This two-year programme purports to edify and inspire the students to make the nation self-reliant in the field of power distribution. I am sure this programme will go a long way in building capacity in the power distribution sector in the country".
Expressing his thoughts on the announcement of the programme, R V Shahi, Secretary, Power, said, "It is extremely important that the personnel engaged in electricity distribution are adequately trained to address the challenges ahead. Power utilities should seize this opportunity to motivate and train their people".
Robert O Blake, Jr., Charge d’ Affairs, US Embassy, India, said, "MDI’s prestigious reputation and the full support of the Ministry of Power speaks of India’s commitment to supporting electricity distribution. And I am confident that this particular alliance through the PG Energy Management Course will raise the quality of professional management and governance in the sector - essential element for India to meet its burgeoning power needs while achieving wider prosperity as a society".
"Several leading institutes were pitching for this programme but our experience in the sector was most extensive, which is why we were chosen to partner this initiative. We are sure the participants would act as change masters in the sector once they go back after the programme", says Dr. Pritam Singh, Director, MDI, which has offered training programmes to NTPC, IOC, ONGC, Power Grid and several others in the past. This is a unique full-time PGDBM tailored to provide in depth understanding of how best to manage power utility functions.
