The deafening cheer by the students of M O P
Vaishnav College for Women marked the beginning of their
freshers' cultural fest - ‘Abhilasha’. The theme of this year's
festival was ‘Akansha - Aspire, Soar….Time is now’. The two-day
event was held on July 20-21 on the college premises in
Nungambakkam, Chennai.
All the first-year students from 14
departments participated in various competitions such as rocking
western music, classical Bharatanatyam contest, insightful
debates, hilarious JAM, 60 seconds to fame, folk dance and many
more. A total of 22 events, including sports,
for the first time, were conducted in which about 1,000 students
participated. Abhilasha provides a platform for freshers to
bring out their talent through various events.
The culturals began with a bang when it was
inaugurated by the star cast of
‘Chennai-600028’ - by moving their feet for the track
‘Jalsa’ from the movie. The liveliness of the crowd multiplied
when personalities such as RJ Shiva, VJ Craig, choreographer
Jayashree, theatre artistes Manasi, Sarvesh, Aruna Ganesh Ram
and Prithvi from Oxygen band were present as judges for various
competitions.
The president of the Student Council, Archana,
said, "Abhilasha is an event conducted for identifying the most
talented freshers that come into our college every year. The
exposure that they get during these events, with renowned
experts judging them in various competitions, gives them a start
towards making a rewarding career of something they are
passionate about." It is a perfect start to college life, she
added. Priya M, a first-year student, says,
"Our talent is put to good use by our department. This helps us
in warming up to college life and for the competitive standards
within the college. It also helps us create a bonding with our
seniors and fellow students from various departments and
generally helps us feel we belong to the college."
The most fascinating thing about the event was that students'
flow into the college began as early as five in the morning to
keep up the spirit of Abhilasha. The entire campus was packed
with various hues. And the winner of the two-day-long event was
the Department of Visual Communication followed by the
Department of Commerce. The cheering trophy was also grabbed by
Visual Communication. Dhivya
