A day at Anna University
It seemed like only a short while ago that they were child labourers. On June 28, they were in the prestigious Anna University, interacting with the college students and planning their future.
NGO Shabnam Resources, a charitable trust, had rehabilitated some kids from the brick industries to attend alternative schooling in the Red Hills area. On June 28, the children were taken to Anna University for an intervention
programme.
The children re-enacted the
Child Parliament that they had held on June 13 in a hall in Red Hills. This impressed the students of Anna University very much.
The students then took the children under their wings and escorted them in pairs to the various faculties of the university and explained the work that was being done in the departments.
The students also gave away each child a notebook, pencil, eraser and scale.
University student leader Bimal promised on behalf of the students that they would take an active part in the educational programmes of Shabnam Resources in the areas where child labour was rampant.
Giving great hope to the children, he said they had a bright future and would become students of Anna University when they grew up.
Shabnam Resources director M R Hubert explained the need to take up child labour issues in a profound manner. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Prof Shanmughasundaram, Prof Elangovan and Prof Srinivasalu for making the event possible.
The children were also treated to some declicious food in the afternoon, enjoyed in the company of the university students.
