MECHANICA 2006
Mechanica is the annual technical festival of the department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT-Madras, presented by the Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA), the largest of its kind at IIT-Madras. This will be held at IIT-Madras from March 31 to April 2, 2006. chennaionline.com is a media sponsor for the festival.

The technical festival was started with a vision to celebrate the spirit of Mechanical Engineering, and to appreciate the diverse applications offered by this field. Only when one explores his surroundings and activities in life and appreciates the exquisite techniques, does he know that life would not run the same way but for the terrific principles and concepts backing it.
"We, at Mechanica, realise and encourage this spirit of using mechanical engineering concept to explain the beautiful but rarely noticed points, and to think ahead using these concepts, striving to improve the existing applications," said a spokesman of the association.
The numerous events at Mechanica offer scope for many skills. The hands-on events can perhaps get you the closest to applications in life.
Robotics, and Contraptions have remained a favourite for years. They help bring out the ingenuity, creativity and intuitive thought in many. If you have the passion to make things work, want to experience the ‘eureka’ of your creation, Mech Things Work is just for you.
If there’s anything unique to Mechanical, it’s Design. The Design contests at Mechanica do just that. It makes one realise that coming up with a good design solves half the problem at hand. Without a design, nothing goes forward.
A new event this year at Mechanica is Imagineering which aims at revealing the wonders imagination can do in engineering. If you have a good eye, and have a feel of the various mechanisms, you’ll probably love this.
All said and done, any engineering application or work has to have a strong theoretical background, with absolutely no margin for errors. Paper presentation at Mechanica tests the originality, and the rigour with which new facts, and conclusions are established.
Also to be accepted is the fact that computers are being used increasingly in mechanical fields, for optimisation and better design. Probably nothing is made today without the powerful tool of simulations. The E-Modeling and the Simulation contests test the modelling skills of participants.
Well, almost everyone knows that nothing in this world can be done without borrowing help from the science of certainty, mathematics. All applications in life can most certainly be described by mathematical equations, some simple, some complex. Mech modeling proves that.
Last but not the least, without humour there’s no life. There are thoughts which make you initially laugh, some roll, but later think. The Ignobel prizes are just for that. If you feel you can fuel an idea, evoking laughter, you’re wanted here!
Overall, it’s going to a fun and excitement-filled two days! And prizes worth Rs 2 lakh to be won! So just make time for yourself and land up here! And for other details, please visit the Mechanica website
