Alumni meeting at Loyola College
More than 200 alumnus of Loyola College were present at the annual general meeting and alumni day at Bertram Hall in the college on the December 9, 2005. The students who had gathered on the occasion seemed to be a rare mix of the young and old as the participants were from the 1945 batch to the recent one. This year marks a special triple anniversary for the institute: The 450th death anniversary of Father Ignatius, founder of the Society of Jesus, 500th birth anniversary of Father Francis Xavier, and the commemoration of the 400th year of the arrival of Robert D. Nobilli to India.
Father B Jeyaraj, rector, Loyola College, reminded that the get-together was a family gathering and acknowledged the tireless efforts of Fr S Peter Xavier, the former president of the association, in taking the association to stupendous heights. He also added that the regular meetings were an opportunity to increase the bonding with the alma mater besides strengthening it. He noted that the institute’s students were known for academic excellence and social equity and mentioned that both were equally important in the Indian context. Fr F Andrew, the secretary of the college, expressed happiness at the encouraging amount of interaction and also appealed to the alumni to come back to their mother’s home (the college).
Principal, Fr A Albert Muthumalai called upon the students to recollect and relish the moments they had spent on the campus. He said he could see emotion in the brimming eyes of the members while sharing the experiences.
The president of the alumni association outlined the activities and welfare measures implemented by them. Another member outlined the vision for 2010.The vice-president of the alumni association delivered the vote of thanks. The evening drew to a close with entertainment and dinner.
