Anna Adarsh college seminar on environment
The Enviro Club of Anna Adarsh College for Women organised a national-level seminar on environment on February 1 and 2, 2007. The seminar was inaugurated by state Minister for Environment T P M Mohideen Khan.
Dr S Marcelin Pushpa, convener, Enviro Club, welcomed the gathering and said the future of the earth was the most important challenge and the members of the Enviro Club have come together to value, preserve and protect the environment by educating and empowering the youth to create a more informed and environmentally responsible future generation.
The presidential address was delivered by Padma Shankar, principal of the college. She highlighted the various environmental problems and the role of the students in conserving the environment. She administered a pledge and it was taken by the students to preserve and conserve the environment.
In his inaugural address, Minister Mohideen Khan commended the college for taking up the cause of environment. He deeply appreciated the work of the students in taking active part in protecting the environment.

After the inauguration, the sessions began with a bang and the first speaker was Shekar Dattatri, wildlife and conservation film-maker. He spoke on the importance of preserving endangered species and discussed about the various ways in which the environment is exploited by man. He said we don’t require an environmentalist to inspire us to protect the environment and asked the students to stand before the mirror and take a vow to care of the environment. The much-awaited film, ‘Mindless Mining - The Tragedy of Kudremukh’, a pro bono project on the devastation caused by iron ore mining in one of the best rainforest National Parks of India was screened and it was an eye-opener for the young minds.
Dr P Sai Prasad, training officer, Environmental Training Institute, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, spoke about the various types of pollution and the methods undertaken by the Pollution Control Board to control pollution. He said there would be proper enforcement only when people willingly came forward to take the initiative to conserve and preserve the environment.
Lalitha Ramadorai, project officer, C P R Environmental Education Centre, spoke on the need for conservation of the biodiversity and the role of their centre in protecting the sacred trees and mangroves.

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION
The Enviro Club of Anna Adarsh College of Women conducted various competitions simultaneously along with the seminar. Eight colleges participated in the competitions. The seminar was supported by the Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu and co-sponsored by Airtel
Chennai.
The topic for essay writing was on ‘Environmental Ethics’. The poster-making competition had the theme ‘Preserve or Perish’. The students displayed their exhibits based on the topic ‘Art out of Waste’. The Enviro Quiz was conducted with the usual zeal.
Then the paper presentation competition on the topic ‘Disaster Management – Issues and Challenges’ took place, followed by a special presentation by Dr S Muthan, Assistant Professor, Dept of ECE, Anna University. He screened a short film on the tsunami and it really ignited a spark among the student community about the disaster faced by human beings. There was also a special address by Manoj Bhatia JG, Commandant, Indian Coast Guard. He spoke on coastal pollution and the role of Coast Guard in protecting the environment.

Dr S Marcelin Pushpa, convener, Enviro Club, welcomed the gathering with a note that Mother Earth was benevolent and little did she demand in return. The seminar came to an end with the valedictory address by K S Neelakantan, I.F.S, director, Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu. He gave a vivid scenario on the different types of environmental degradation and the role of young students in protecting the environment. He distributed prizes for the various competitions, along with Padma Shankar, principal of the college.
The grand finale of the seminar was the cultural show organised by the students of Enviro Club which included a choreography on the different ways in which the earth is overstressed and the solutions for protecting the planet, with the final message where two little children carried the poster ‘Save the Earth for the Next Generation’.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Sahitya, president of Enviro Club.
