MOP FM launched
MOP FM 91.2, the community radio service of the MOP Vaishnav College for Women, was launched with great fanfare at the college premises on March 12 by University Grants Commission chairman, Dr Arun
Nigavekar.
The FM programmes on information, hygiene, education and entertainment would be on air every day from 6.30 to 7.30 a.m. (repeat from 6 to 7 p.m.). The content and production would be entirely handled by the students.
Nigavekar said the college's success and the spirit of innovation shown by its management, faculty and students demonstrated by the students revealed that self-financing colleges had an important role to play in toning up the quality of education. In a sense, the operation of self-financing colleges amounted to privatisation of colleges, he said, adding that the public-private partnership was required in terms of quality and quantity in the field of education.
College secretary P Haridas and principal, Dr Nirmala Prasad, said it was a matter of pride that the institution was the first private college in the country to have its own community radio station.
Madras University Vice-Chancellor S P Thyagarajan, who released the fortnightly newsletter of the college, called 'Yuvashakti,, said the radio service could be used to spread greater awareness in the community on issues of great importance like health, hygiene, pollution, nutrition and so on.
Among those who took part in the function were Kavitha, dean of School of Media of the college, Vyjayanthi, head, Department of Journalism and in-charge of 'Yuvashakti', Chitra, the coordinator of the FM programme.
