Pak reporter at SMC
In the advent of Pakistan
journalists and reporters crossing the border and visiting
Kashmir, Stella Maris College too was paid a visit by a Pakistan journalist on October 4.
Ishtiaq Ali Mekhri, sub–editor and feature writer of the daily 'Dawn’, was invited by the Department of International Studies for a session with the students. Mekhri had completed his education in Karachi University and has been participating in world seminars regarding foreign policies and disarmament.
During the session, which began at 11 a.m., Mekhri spoke of what he felt after having visited Kashmir and having viewed the situation not only from the political perspective but also from the point of view of a journalist from Pakistan.
He presented the ‘case’ of Pakistan, as it were, on various issues, relating to the Parliament attacks of December 2001, Kashmir and the tension that had been (and still is) exists between the two countries.
He concluded his seminar by telling the students that everything was at the superficial level. One had to probe and go deeper into the matter before hurling accusations or coming to any decision regarding any issue concerning the two countries.
This seminar was followed by a short interactive session where the students posed their queries and raised doubts pertaining to the relationship between the two countries and Pakistan’s stance. This session was very useful and the students gained a small insight into matters relating to India and Pakistan.
