The cropping up of
engineering colleges everywhere has led to a reformation in the system of engineering education, benefiting students. Five-year course is a thing of the past and the four-year ‘plan’ has done wonders for them. Colleges now go beyond teaching and also make sure students get job prospects even as they complete their education.
‘Future Fair’, a unique assembly of several corporate houses at
Dhanalakshmi Engineering
College, Tambaram, is one such attempt that has broadened the horizons of students with regard to employment. There were about 20 stalls on the campus from reputed companies. This is the first time that a grouping of so many corporate houses is taking place under one roof. The student community was overwhelmed, quips Dr Doraiswamy, vice-principal of the college. The month of March is cherished by students because of ‘Future Fair’.
Even recently, about seven companies visited the college to continue the ‘Future Fair’. The remarkable feature of the fair is the memorandum of understanding signed with the companies.
As part of this fair, the college also offers a special ‘value-added course’, wherein the best students appear for the aptitude test hosted by the companies. The students are exposed to different fields like networking, telecom, etc. A special feature of this course is that the students who are selected, attend seminars the cost of which is shared by the college management. The management also sponsors students to an extent.
The labs are well-equipped and students do not have to share any equipments or instrument with their co-students. Extra attention is paid to the students as they are taught subjects besides the curriculum.
A visionary, Dr Ramamurthy, founded the college and brought about a change in engineering college education. After more than three decades of teaching at
Anna University, he succeeded in starting the Dhanalakshmi Engineering College with a goal of making the students climb the ladder of success in all spheres.
The management caters to the needs of the students by having an “integrated campus software”. This is a facility under which information about the students is stored in the college server. Each student and parent is provided an ID and password.
The management says it tries to enhance the prospect of its students by implementing special coaching for TOEFL, GRE, entrepreneurship development project (EDP) and personality development programme
(PDP).
The hostel makes the inmates comfortable with its idyllic surroundings, peaceful and calm atmosphere. The stress of studies is mitigated by attending yoga classes. A grand temple is planned to make students realise the Divine through prayers and meditation.
The college is situated far from the madding crowd of the city and is a microcosm of a university amidst rich flora and fauna.
