Eminent scientist Prof. Y. S. Rajan presented the 'Laser Soft' awards to winners of the Essay competition on India Vision at a function organised here on August 8 by the Prime Point Foundation.
The India Vision Awareness programme (conducted jointly with Sri Krishna Sweets) was also launched by Prof Rajan, who is the Scientific Advisor to the Chief Minister of Punjab and Chairman, Board of Governors/Vice Chancellor of Punjab Technical University and co-author of the book 'India 2020' jointly with President Dr Abdul
Kalam).
The Foundation conducted an essay contest for the college students of Tamil Nadu on 'India Vision 2020 - Role of youth in building a strong India'. The Foundation received 250 essays from 109 institutions. These essays were evaluated by a panel headed by Prof. Rajan and the winners were given cash awards at the function.
K Srinivasan, Chairman of the Foundation, said the highest number of entries were received from Annamalai University. Out of 35 essays from this University, 29 were submitted by the Department of Education alone.
The Foundation received 25 entries from 23 Chennai colleges in this contest. The essays were evaluated by a jury with Prof. Rajan as its chairman and T. Kannan and Lakshmi Sriram as members of the committee.
S Vadivelan, doing his third year Diploma in Teacher Education, District Institute of Education and Training, Pudukottai, received the first prize which carried a cash award of
Rs. 5,000.
The second prize , a cash award of Rs. 3,000 went to N Srinivasa Gopalan, IVth year BE student in St Joseph's College of Engineering,
Chennai.
Besides the awards for the winner and the runner-up, in the English and Tamil categories, the Foundation also presented Rs. 500 each to ten best essays, five in Tamil and five in English.
