Education

With the oncoming of the information explosion and widening of existing vistas and addition of several newer media, the demand for journalists in various forums like the print magazines, radio, television, e-zines and others is going up in leaps and bounds. Though many do not insist on a diploma in journalism, it is one of the most sought after course these days.

Several Universities like the Bangalore University, Chennai University, Madurai Kamarajar University, Annamalai University and the Jamiah-miliah-Islamiha University in New Delhi (Jamiah Nagar 100 025) are offering a degree course in Journalism.

A degree in Journalism is offered by several private institutions also. A few of these institutions are enlisted below:

Asian College of Journalism
4 Kasthuri Centre
Anna Salai
Chennai 600 002
Telephone: 4350387, 4350364
Madras Christian College
Tambaram (East)
Chennai 600 059.
Indian Institute of Mass Communication
Aruna Asaf Ali Marg
J. N. U. (New Campus)
New Delhi 110 067
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan
Kasturba Gandhi Marg
New Delhi 110 001.

A keen interest in the national, international and local events, a good command over the language, a flare for writing, the ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and lucidly, a basic knowledge of economics and politics - is a combination that would fetch a position in the field as a journalist even without a formal qualification in Journalism. Most of the newspapers and periodicals like to go by experience and track record rather than degrees and diplomas in journalism.

However, there is no doubt that a formal education and training would be of immense help to the aspiring journalist.
