Rural Phantasy

The Madras Players, the well-known English theatre group - the oldest in India - will perform 'Rural Phantasy', a musical adaptation of Kalki's Tamil short story 'Kanaiyazhiyin Kanavu' in English by Gowri Ramnarayan at the Museum Theatre, Chennai, on March 10, 11 and 12, 2006.

Co-produced by JustUs Repertory, this full-length musical, the first such effort by Madras Players, will take the audience to a little village in Thanjavur district, where arrives in 1941 a young woman from Kolkata, bringing not only romance, but also the freedom struggle and its reform movements.

Renowned Carnatic vocalists T M Krishna and Sangeetha Sivakumar will sing live for this play, supported by the promising young musician Amritha Murali.

The score includes songs of the nationalist movement originaliy rendered by M S Subbulakshmi and D K Pattammal. Also featured are songs from the film 'Sakuntalai', originally rendered by MS and G N Balasubramanian, besides specially choreographed dance and mime sequences.
