Indian captain Sourav Ganguly today said the controversial players' contracts, as it existed now, would require far more "negotiations" to be set right for the World Cup next year.
Speaking just before the current crisis on sponsorship issue was resolved, Ganguly said, "We don't know how the agreement is going to be for the World Cup. If it is the same as has been given to us for this (Champions) trophy, a lot more negotiations would need to be done because there are a lot more sponsors for the World Cup."
The ICC World Cup, cricket's showpiece event, is due to be held in South Africa next year in February-March.
Ganguly said the players could not sign the ICC contract because that would have amounted to breaking their existing contracts, which is illegal.
"As everyone knows, breaking existing contracts is illegal. That's what we told ICC. To expect them (the sponsors) to do that (restrain from conflict advertising) for the whole period of time (30 days after the tournament) is pretty difficult," he said.
"It's got to be a give-and-take policy because we have existing contracts," he said.
