Kiwis thru to semis, to meet Pak

Nairobi, Oct 9: New Zealand beat Zimbabwe by a big margin of 64 runs and entered the semi-finals of the ICC Cup here today. They will meet Pakistan in the first semi-final on Oct 11.

Zimbabwe put up an inept batting display to mess up the chase. The New Zealand bowling was nothing to write home about but still they kept picking up wickets at regular intervals. It was an excellent batting track and it was within Zimbabwe's capability to make the target.

Take Paul Wiseman, for instance. In the team only because Daniel Vettori is injured, Wiseman took four wickets in 9.2 overs, conceding 45 runs. Wiseman did little except to bowl within himself, and he was rewarded by the batsmen making mistake after the other. His victims were Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Stuart Carlisle and Nkala. He was not turning the ball much or floating it. The batsman made the mistake of not using their feet against him.

Carlisle, who was a little lucky in the early part of his innings, was the only Zimbabwe batsman to offer some resistance after the exit of Alistair Campbell, declared LBW to Chris Harris by umpire Steve Bucknor. He played some good strokes to make 67, but it was not enough to take his team to victory. He was caught by keeper Parore off Wiseman.

Nathan Astle's average bowling skills earned him two wickets, those of Heath Streak and Paul Strang.

There were two run outs -- Guy Whittal, who played quite well to score 26 in 21 balls, and Dirk Viljoen. Both the run outs were effected by Chris Harris, who is still very sharp on the field.

Roger Twose was declared man of the match.

Pakistan is having the easy half of the draw, and has to beat an average team like New Zealand to make it to the final. India, on the other hand, after one epic battle against Australia, are likely to face another against South Africa, which is playing its quarter final against England tomorrow.
