Collins reprimanded for excessive appealing
St Lucia, June 13: West Indian seamer Pedro Collins has been reprimanded for excessive appealing in his team's second cricket Test against India here.
The penalty imposed by match referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand related to the dismissal of V V S Laxman on the first day of the match when the batsman edged Collins to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.
Laxman appeared to walk before the umpire could make a decision but the bowler was found to have breached 1.5 of the ICC Code which relates to "the practice of celebrating a dismissal before the decision has been given".
The left-arm seamer pleaded guilty to the charge brought by on-field umpires Simon Taufel of Australia and Asad Rauf of Pakistan and third umpire Steve Bucknor of the West Indies.
Virender Sehwag was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for the same offence in the first Test at Antigua but Crowe said the circumstances in the two cases were slightly different.
"In this instance, the batsman appeared to start to walk after getting a healthy edge to the ball before the umpire had a chance to make a decision," the match referee said. (Agencies)
