New Delhi, Feb 8: Nimbus' refusal to share live telecast of the India-Sri Lanka cricket match with Doordarshan, as mandated by an ordinance, has irked the government, which is all set to issue a show-cause to the private broadcaster asking why action should not be taken against it.
According to highly placed sources, the government has received a complaint from public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, which has cried foul after getting delayed feed of matches from Nimbus.
"The government will issue a show-cause notice to Nimbus for not sharing live telecast with DD today, as was mandated by the ordinance issued last week," the source said.
Nimbus, the BCCI telecast rights holder, today refused to pass on the live feed to DD, saying it was awaiting directions of the Delhi High Court on the matter. The issue, which came up for hearing at the Delhi High Court today, was posted for further hearing tomorrow, as arguments could not be completed due to paucity of time.
According to penalties in the 'Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Ordinance, 2007', the government can suspend or revoke a broadcaster's licence, permission or registration, for denying content to Prasar Bharati. A penalty of Rs one crore can also be slapped for the refusal.
"The government will take action under the existing law as Nimbus has violated provisions of the ordinance as well as regulations stipulated in the uplinking guidelines," the sources said. (Agencies)
