Will Priyanka Chopra, 18, become the fifth Miss India to be crowned Miss World? We will know the answer on November 30, when the finals of the Miss World 2000 pageant will be held at the Millenium Dome in London. American talk show host Jerry Springer will compere the show.

This is the fiftieth edition of the Miss World show. British impresario Eric Morley launched the pageant in 1951. He kept it going over the decades, undeterred by growing criticism to the effect that beauty contests were exploitative, that they undermined the dignity of women. But Morley will not be around for this year's finals. He died on November 8 last. Julia Morley, his widow, is now the sole overall organiser of the pageant

This year's contestants arrived in London on November 5. Later they left for the Maldives for the shooting of the swimsuit round of the contest. The preliminaries of the pageant will be held on November 29. November 30 will see Diana Hayden, Miss India and Miss World 1997, in a new role. She has been named one of the judges of this year's contest.

Aishwarya above all!

Treating the fiftieth anniversary of 'Miss World' as a special occasion, globalbeauties.com, a website devoted to beauty pageants, set up a panel of ten 'experts' from round the world to pick the most beautiful Miss World of them all. The experts' choice? India's own Aishwarya Rai, Miss World 1994!

Diana Hayden will not be the only Indian to be in the limelight on November 30. The new Miss World will be crowned by Yukta Mookhey, last year's winner. And among the eight fashion designers from round the world chosen to design the dresses of the 95 contestants for the opening number is Hemant Trivedi of Mumbai.

Aishwarya, Diana and Yukta are not the only Indians to have won the Miss World title. Way back in 1966 there was Reita Faria. And don't forget, Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta have been crowned Miss Universe! All things considered, then, Priyanka Chopra carries a heavy burden of expectations. For the record, Priyanka is 5 feet, 7.5 inches tall and is studying to become a clinical psychologist.
