Gayatri japam chanted 25,000 times Variety

Sri Siva Sudha, a spiritual association to preserve our culture and heritage, based at NATCO Colony, Kottivakkam, in association with Om Sri Arthanareeswarar Aanmeega Margam, a social and spiritual organisation, along with Sri Valliyur Joshier Trust, all based at Kottivakkam, organised a Samesti Gayatri Maha Mantra Japa-Homam on August 29, 2007.

Sri Gayatri is the mother of the Vedas as is evident from the chant 'Gayatreem Sandasaam Maatha' - Sandas meaning Veda.

The efficacy of chanting Gayatri mantra is that those who chant it in 'Gaana Roopa', with love and devotion, shall be protected by Sri Gayatri Mother.

The Gayatri maha mantram has 24 aksharas divided into three parts and each part contains eight letters, referring to the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas in a condensed form. The Atharvana Veda has a separate Gayatri mantra, which can be chanted only after obtaining Brahmopadesam a second time.

'Dhripya Yevathu Vedhebya Paanam Paamadhudhu Ham'. The essence of Gayatri mantra is evidently found to be the preamble of Vedas and a protector from evil spirits and shall not be given up.

On August 29, the Gayatri maha mantra japam was chanted 25,000 times by a group of persons, followed by the Gayatri homam at NATCO Colony. Rajan Aiyer, country manager, @Road, Tidel Park, Chennai, and the executive trustee of the Sri Appayya Dikshitar Foundation, and Kottivakkam TAMBRAS unit office-bearers S Ravi, president, K Venkatraman, general secretary, and V S Krishnamurthy, treasurer, were present on the occasion.

S Srinivasan, in whose house the elaborate homam and japam were conducted, proposed a vote of thanks.
