Making a vocation of singing

'Maa Mallupuram Chennai'

Christmases may come and Christmases may go, but the spirit of Christmas in the song 'Shantha Rathri Thru Rathri' goes on flowing in the heart of Malayalee Christians. Can anybody forget that celestial voice of Jollee Abraham?

Though Jollee's name is associated with Christian devotional songs, he has sung more than 1,000 film songs in different languages. The depth and energy of his debut song, 'Jayikkanai Janichavan Ngan', in 'Chattambi Kalayani', still inspire and motivate people.

The sweetness of his voice in songs like 'Rajaneegandhi Vidarnnu' (Panchami), 'Eenam Padi Thalarnallo' (Sneham), 'Adiyenai Paaramma' (Vanakkathukuriya Kadhaliye), which he sang years ago, is still the voice of the 51-year-old man who stays in Kilpauk Gardens with his wife Elizabeth and two children. However, he has been out of the film field for almost a decade.

Meet any artiste, and he or she will tell you of a 'Barber Theory'. They say they are often compelled to sing whatever song they get in order to remain in the field. They pacify themselves by comparing their plight to that of barbers, who have to keep their knives ready for whatever work they are called for. According to the 'Barber Theory', no singer shall be selective.

Jollee did not like to sing songs which went against his moral views. He wanted to use his voice for a "noble cause". He became selective and got out of the field or rather changed track.

Jollee began to concentrate on Christian devotional songs. For this purpose he started a recording studio in 1991. Rohit Recoding Company markets Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada devotional songs.

Jollee's long cherished ambition - 'The Singing Bible' - was released recently. This English album presents biblical stories in songs. Jollee started Rohit Recording International to market his English albums.

"I get more satisfaction by singing devotional songs than film songs," he says. He has sung more than 10,000 Christian devotional songs. Perhaps, no other Christian devotional singer has achieved this.

It is heartening to meet a singer who does what his convictions say and finds absolute satisfaction in his profession or rather vocation, to use a Christian term.
