The Temple - A villanelle

There it stood, an oldest fane,
Hardly a few yards from the road
A subdued stir of joy in reign
Steeped our hearts in pure joy benign
As we with cautious steps instrode
Our heats the rocky roof did gain
When in beatific stance in line
We kept shedding our earthly load
As our gaze melted to divine
Spark the stone Shiva's mystic shine.
And as we inched again forward
The roof sloped and we bent in pain
The bell rang the cave to usher in
In arcane hush tongues dropped no word
At once all life's cares caved in
It was a humble stoop to win
The Mother's heart brimming ahead
Compassion as we bowed out in
A subdued stir of joy in reign.
