Rishikaas - V

Sratha Kaamayani

Sratha Kaamayani is the last woman rishi in the rishikaas series.

H H Wilson, who learned and translated the Rig Veda, says, "There is great meaning in the name of the rishika. Rishi Sratha belonged to the family of Kaamayani. She was the 'faith' in a family of 'love'.

Here are some of the Sukthams she wrote:

We light the fire in faith, and put sacrificial offerings in that fire with faith. Reaching heights of joy, we praise the faith. (Rig Veda-X 151.1)

Bless those who praise faith, O faith! Bless those who donate liberally. Bless also the words which I uttered now. (Rig Veda-X 151.2)

According to Brhuthdevatha, which compiles the Sukthas of the Rig Veda, there were 27 women rishis, and according to Chayanar, there were 29 women rishis. Other than these rishikaas, Kabilar's legend mentions Devahuthi, Athiri's wife Anasuya, Vasishtar's wife Arundathi as Bramhavadinis and maharishis.

Mythreyi and Gargi are eminent Bramhavadinis and maharishis are mentioned in the Upanishads.
