Claustrophobic
atmosphere, creepy feeling, congestion and a lot more have led the
city women opt not for the bus and choose the train for their
regular mode of commutation. Do Chennai women prefer the bus or the
train? This was the topic of our survey among 500 city women which
further led us to a discussion regarding the positive and negative
aspects of using different modes of public transportation.
Gaining
over an eighty percent majority, Chennai trains seem to be the
rescuer of any working women. With no traffic jams and prompt
service with the unique selling point among women being the ladies
compartment and the ladies special train, this mode is not just
preferred by this gender.
The Tamilnadu Government in the recent years have
done a lot of changes to the buses and introduced various series of
buses and yet the most preferred remains to be the train. Chitra, a
bank employee says, “Trains are anytime safe for a women to travel
and the frequency is commendable. I prefer going by train as I can
catch up with my friends for relaxation”
Well,
if that seems to be a routine answer, Radha, a State Government
employee who has shifted her mode of transportation recently says, “
The frequency of buses are good and the bus which I used to take
stops right in front of my office. But traffic jam has highest
control on the time taken to reach the destination. After I started
going by trains, I reach my office sharp by 10.00. Though traveling
by train takes ten minutes walking time from park station. I reach
on time.”
Not just this trains also have fast trains and
does not have to cross pot holes to reach the destination. So this
is what our city women prefer. Trains win over buses by a vast
majority.
