Vijayadasami in Nanganallur
With curtains ringing down on Kolu, Vijayadasami had a special significance in this temple town of Nanganallur. With the God of Knowledge,
`Hayagrivar', seated effulgently, radiating divinity, tiny-tots and students made a beeline to the temple to seek his blessings. Akshara Abiyasam (the first lesson for the child) was done to the little ones who are on the threshold of entering school. Special poojas were performed to initiate them into studies. School and college students prayed ardently for success in their exams.
In the MMTC Navaneetha Krishna Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, the presiding deity, Lakshmi Narasimha, went out in a `kudurai vahana' in the night to bless the devotees. Amidst chanting of mantras, pooja was performed for a couple of wooden blocks to symbolise the `temple car'. The temple authorities have decided to build a temple car. This place bustled with spiritual and cultural activity casting a magical spell on us. The Lord fired an arrow in mid-air, signalling the end of
Navarathri.
Music gurus had a special day. Their schedule was packed from morning till night. "I did not have a moment to breathe," quips a
Carnatic music
guru who initiated beginners into music. Many parents took their children to seek the blessings of the guru. Basic lessons in music were taught as a usual practice. Those who opted for violin and mirdangam, they carried their instruments to the guru's houses. The whole atmosphere was suffused with gentle music. Since it is considered auspicious to begin any new venture on Vijayadasami day several new shops and fine arts classes were started that day.
Kolu was coming to a close with the doll-seller giving away dolls at throwaway prices. Women flocked to the 'doll shops' and bargained and bargained. Some of them succeeded in purchasing dolls at rock bottom prices.
Since nine days was not enough to visit their friends' and relatives' houses for Kolu I could see many clad in `pattu saree' with ethnic jewellery going to their friends' houses for 'tambulam' on Vijayadasami day.
