Jayakanthan, 71, who has to his credit about 40 novels, 200 short stories and 15 collections of essays, besides some translations, including that of Romain Rolland's biography of Mahatma Gandhi, is the second Tamil author after Akhilan, for his 'Chithirai Pavai', to get this award, said a press release issued by Bharatiya Jnanpith. The award carries a citation plaque, a bronze statue of Vagdevi and Rs 5 lakh in cash. Announcing the award, L M Singhvi, chairman of the Jnanpith Selection Board, said Jayakanthan had not only enriched the high literary tradition of the Tamil language, but had also made an outstanding contribution to shape Indian literature.
The works of Jayakanthan delicately unveil every depth of human emotions and equations, he said, adding it was a moment of great pride for the Bharatiya Jnanpith to choose him for the award. The decision was taken at a meeting of the board in which eminent writers, Mahashweta Devi, Vishnukant Shastri, C T Indira, Sitangshu Yashaschandra, U R Anandamurthy, Ramakanta Rath, Gopichand Narang, Ashok Vajpai and Prabhakar Shrotriya were present. Born in a middle-class family in Cuddalore in 1934, Jayakanthan had narrated his experience in the area of politics and arts in two autobiographical volumes and stormed popular magazines with his unconventional short stories and novels. Some of his stories have been made into successful movies. Jayakanthan, born on April 24, 1934, was a trendsetter in many ways and a natural successor to writer Pudumaipithan and will forever remain a role model for all future writers. His forays into the film world have been limited, but he has left an indelible mark and brought a refreshing whiff of realism into the melodramatic portals of Kodambakkam.
Surprisingly, A Bhimsingh, the Mughal of Melodrama in the '60s, did a volte-face in the '70s and thought it fit to film Jayakanthan's novel 'Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal'. He expressed profound admiration for Jayakanthan thorough professional approach and brilliant screenplay. The Bhimsingh-Jayakanthan collaboration brought one more offbeat venture - 'Oru Nadigai Nadagam Paarkiraal'- 1978. Jayakanthan's 'Pudhu Seruppu Kadikkum' never saw the light of day, which fate was shared by 'Ethanai Konam Ethanai Paarvai'. 'Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidhargal' was first published as a novel - June 1970. It won the Sahitya Academy award in 1972. The movie won him the best story writer award from the Tamil Nadu government. Jayakanthan has also written a handful of film songs, and all of them are memorable: Thenankeetru Oonjalile (Paadhai Theriyudhu Paar - PBS-SJ)
