TN tops in accident deaths

India was one of the leaders in accident deaths in the world with Tamil Nadu topping the country, according to G U G Sastry, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic Control, Chennai.

Flagging off an awareness programme on the use of helmet recently at the Jeppiar Engineering College's NSS unit, Sastry said that the students owed a major responsibility for such deaths through various forms of traffic violation within and outside the city. Therefore, he advised the students to follow the traffic rules more sincerely than the others.

Sastry said that the use of helmet was a very important part of traffic safety and the traffic police were ensuring necessary steps to create awareness in this regard. He, however, stressed that there was no proposal to make helmet-wearing mandatory. He added that helmets may not stop accidents but could avert deaths. On mass traffic violations such as lane violations and overspeeding, Sastry said defaulters would be strictly dealt with.

The awareness programme on helmets was organised by the Jeppiaar Engineering College's NSS unit as part of a routine activity. The volunteers and campaign assistants, mainly comprising students and faculty members of the college, assembled at 14 different traffic intersections such as Mylapore, Anna Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur, and distributed pamphlets on road safety to two-wheeler drivers and pillion riders. They stressed the value of wearing helmets, like eye protecion and dust-free driving apart from the quintessential life saving abilities. About 300 students and 60 faculty members participated in the campaign.

Jeppiaar, Chairman, Jeppiaar Engineering College, B V Ramakrishna, Commander, Commanding Officer 4 (TN) NCC and the other directors of the college were present on the occasion.
